NASA Unveils Crew for Artemis III Spaceflight Mission
The National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) has announced the crew for its upcoming Artemis III spaceflight mission. The four-person crew, consisting of astronauts Andre Douglas, Frank Rubio, Luca Parmitano, and Randy Bresnik, will be responsible for collecting research and practicing in-space docking procedures.
The crew’s backgrounds are diverse, with each member bringing unique experiences to the table. Douglas, a 40-year-old engineer from Florida, is making his first spaceflight and will serve as mission specialist. Rubio, a 50-year-old physician from Salvadoran American descent, holds the record for the longest single-duration spaceflight by a US astronaut at 371 days.
Bresnik, a 58-year-old commander with a background in the US Navy and Marine Corps, is the oldest member of the crew and has previously participated in a space shuttle mission. Parmitano, a 49-year-old pilot from Italy, will be the only non-US citizen on the mission.
The Artemis III mission is scheduled to take off before the end of 2027 and will be a public-private partnership with three rockets blasting off as part of the initiative. One rocket will carry the crew into orbit around Earth in an Orion spacecraft, while two other rockets will bear aloft Moon lander models from Blue Origin and SpaceX.
Representatives from NASA and Blue Origin attended a ceremony to unveil the crew, downplaying concerns about the recent explosion of an uncrewed Blue Origin New Glenn rocket. The incident occurred on May 28 and caused damage to a launchpad complex in Florida.
The Artemis III mission will focus on practicing rendezvous procedures with the Moon landers, which are being developed by private firms owned by tech entrepreneurs Jeff Bezos and Elon Musk. The crew’s presence on the flight will make Douglas one of roughly two dozen African American people to travel to space.
NASA Administrator Jared Isaacman introduced the astronauts, stating that each member possesses a unique background and dedication to NASA’s mission.
