NATO Chief Says Europeans Have Received Trumps Defence Message

US President Accuses NATO Countries of Insufficient Support in Iran Conflict

The US president has stated that some NATO countries are not providing sufficient support for the US-Israeli war on Iran. In response, NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte acknowledged “disappointment from the US side” and emphasized that European leaders have received the message to increase their involvement.

On Monday, Rutte made this statement before a meeting of the European Political Community in Armenia. He stated that Europeans are stepping up their role within NATO and strengthening the alliance. The Pentagon announced on Friday that 5,000 US soldiers would be withdrawn from Germany, following comments by German Chancellor Friedrich Merz that Iran was humiliating the US during negotiations aimed at ending the conflict.

European Union officials have expressed surprise over the timing of the troop withdrawal announcement. Kaja Kallas, the EU’s top diplomat, emphasized the need for European nations to strengthen their role within NATO and take on more responsibility. Allison Hart, a NATO spokesperson, stated that officials are working with the US to understand the details of the decision.

Criticism of the war on Iran has grown in recent weeks due to its impact on global trade and shipping in the Strait of Hormuz. Spain has refused to allow US military operations against Iran from its airspace or bases, while other European nations have expressed concerns about the conflict’s economic implications. In response, US President Trump has threatened to end trade ties with countries that do not support US interests.

Rutte stated that more European nations are preparing for potential future conflicts by positioning assets near the Gulf. However, specific details were not provided, and European nations have previously declined to participate in policing the Strait of Hormuz until the conflict is resolved.
