NATO to Deploy New Patriot Missile Defence Unit at Incirlik Air Base
Turkiye’s Ministry of National Defence has announced that NATO will deploy an additional Patriot missile defence unit to the country’s Incirlik Air Base, located near the southern city of Adana. The move comes after several ballistic missiles fired from Iran were intercepted by NATO forces in Turkie airspace.
According to the ministry, the new unit will complement existing national-level security measures aimed at protecting Turkie airspace and citizens. The deployment was made public during a briefing at the Incirlik base on Wednesday.
The Incirlik Air Base hosts personnel from several countries, including the United States, Qatar, Spain, Poland, and Turkey. The exact composition of the new Patriot unit is not specified.
This development follows recent incidents in which NATO air defences shot down two ballistic missiles fired at Turkie on March 4 and March 9. Iran has denied firing any missiles at Turkie, while suggesting that Israel may be behind the attacks as acts of sabotage.
Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan stated that Ankara is discussing discrepancies between Iranian officials’ statements and reality with their counterparts. The ministry has not indicated whether it will formally request protection from NATO members.
In addition to the new deployment at Incirlik, NATO also deployed Patriot defences in the central Malatya region on March 9, where a Kurecik airbase houses a NATO early-warning radar system manned by US troops that can detect Iranian missile launches.
