Nepals Mount Everest poses significant risks to climbers and trekkers

At least five climbers have died on Mount Everest during the current climbing season, according to reports. The victims include two Indian climbers, Sandeep Are and Arun Kumar Tiwari, as well as three Nepali climbers. A United States and a Czech climber also lost their lives on Mount Makalu earlier this month.

Nivesh Karki, director of Pioneer Adventures, has confirmed the deaths, stating that both Are and Tiwari fell ill while descending from the mountain at high altitude. The bodies are currently being retrieved by the company.

Kami Rita Sherpa, a Nepali climber who recently summited Everest for his 32nd time, expressed concerns about the experience of some climbers during an interview with AFP. He noted that the recent expedition felt crowded and called for regulation to limit the number of climbers on the mountain.

According to tourism officials, a record number of climbers reached the summit of Mount Everest from the Nepali side on Thursday, with a preliminary total of 275 pending final confirmation. The Guinness Book of World Records lists the highest number of climbers to reach Everest in a single day as 354, set in May 2019.

The high number of climbers has raised concerns about overcrowding on the mountain, particularly if poor weather shortens the climbing window. Nepali authorities have issued a record 492 permits for foreigners this season, with approximately 600 people having summited Everest since the start of the spring climbing season in April.
