New health regulations banning certain foods take effect nationwide January 1st

Five US states have implemented new restrictions on the purchase of certain foods with Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits, effective January 1.

Iowa has introduced new SNAP restrictions, while Illinois shoppers are now eligible for these changes. Oklahoma plans to restrict SNAP purchases of soda and candy by 2026. West Virginia’s SNAP soda ban is also in effect starting January 1.

The restrictions vary across states but generally limit the purchase of sugary drinks like soda and candies with SNAP benefits.
