US States Launch Investigation into FIFA World Cup 2026 Ticket Pricing
Two US states, New York and New Jersey, have announced an investigation into the pricing structure for the 2026 FIFA World Cup. The inquiry is focused on ticket prices, seat locations, and other aspects of the event.
According to a joint statement from the attorneys general of both states, the ticket prices for the 2026 World Cup “far exceeded” those of previous tournaments. The investigation seeks information on the general pricing structure, location pricing, and seat assignments for the eight matches scheduled to take place at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey.
FIFA has implemented a new pricing system, known as dynamic pricing, which adjusts ticket costs based on demand. However, this approach has led to complaints from fans who have purchased tickets only to receive less desirable seats.
The investigation aims to address concerns raised by fans who feel misled about the final product. The attorneys general are seeking information on the premium ticket option introduced after initial tickets were sold, which contributed to seating location confusion.
In a statement, New York Attorney General Letitia James expressed her desire for transparency and fairness in ticket pricing. “New Yorkers have been waiting years for the World Cup to come to their backyard, and they deserve a fair shot at affordable tickets.” Her counterpart, New Jersey Attorney General Jennifer Davenport, echoed similar sentiments, stating that fans should be able to trust that the tickets they purchase will be the ones they receive.
The investigation is ongoing, with both attorneys general seeking guidance from government officials to resolve disputes from fans.
