New York Boroughs to Host Free World Cup Fan Events

New York City Announces Free Fan Events for World Cup

The city of New York will host a series of free events for football fans during the upcoming World Cup tournament. The announcement was made by Mayor Zohran Mamdani and Governor Kathy Hochul on Monday.

According to the mayor, the goal is to provide an opportunity for all fans to experience the excitement of the World Cup without incurring significant costs. The events will take place at five different locations across the city’s five boroughs: Rockefeller Center in Manhattan, the Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in Queens, Brooklyn Bridge Park in Brooklyn, a shopping center near Yankee Stadium in the Bronx, and a minor league baseball stadium in Staten Island.

The events will include watch parties for World Cup matches and other festivities. In contrast, a separate fan event planned for Sports Illustrated Stadium in Harrison, New Jersey, will cost $10. The World Cup matches themselves will be played at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey, with fans facing significant transportation costs to attend the games.

Transport officials have stated that round-trip train fares from New York City to MetLife Stadium can range from $150 per match, depending on the time of day and availability. On-site parking is not available for most fans, which may impact attendance numbers. The stadium will host eight World Cup matches, including the tournament final on July 19.
