New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani’s wife, Rama Duwaji, has been involved in a controversy surrounding her past work related to Palestinian author Susan Abulhawa. The issue began last week when several right-wing news outlets reported on Duwaji’s connections to Abulhawa and her comments made on social media.
According to reports, Duwaji had provided an illustration for an essay compiled by Abulhawa as part of a collection from writers in Gaza titled “Every Moment is a Life”. The essay, titled “A Trail of Soap”, detailed the difficulties faced by residents of Gaza during Israel’s conflict. Mamdani has since stated that his wife was not involved with Abulhawa and had never met her.
Abulhawa has responded to the controversy, clarifying that she wrote the essay herself and that Duwaji’s illustration was commissioned by a third party. The author has also maintained that her comments on social media were made in response to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict and do not represent anti-Semitism or anti-Jewish racism.
Some critics have expressed concern that Mamdani’s response to the situation may be seen as reinforcing harmful narratives that conflate support for Palestinians with anti-Jewish sentiment. Others have pointed out that Duwaji faces heightened scrutiny as the first Muslim mayor of New York City, while high-profile elected lawmakers launch Islamophobic attacks with little recourse.
Mamdani has stated that his administration is against bigotry of all forms and that he finds Abulhawa’s rhetoric to be unacceptable. In a video statement, Abulhawa has sought to clear up the situation, stating that she was responding to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict from her perspective as a Palestinian who has experienced its effects.
The controversy highlights a broader double standard in the US, where elected officials face scrutiny for their views on Israel and Palestine, while those with Islamophobic views are often given more leeway.
