New York to require social media platforms to display mental health labels

New York State Law Mandates Warnings on Social Media Platforms

Governor Kathy Hochul has signed a bill into law that requires social media platforms with features that encourage excessive use to display labels warning of potential harm to young users’ mental health. The new regulations, which take effect soon, will apply to platforms with infinite scrolling, autoplay, and algorithmic feeds.

The law aims to protect New York’s children from the potential negative effects of these features, which research suggests can overstimulate reward centers and create pathways comparable to those of substance use or gambling addictions. The warnings will be similar to those found on tobacco products and plastic packaging, alerting users to potential risks.

Under the new law, social media platforms that breach regulations may face civil penalties of up to $5,000 per violation. The state attorney general will have the authority to take legal action against non-compliant platforms.

New York is joining a growing number of states in the US that have implemented similar laws for young users. Other countries, including Australia, Malaysia, and Denmark, are also considering similar bans or tightening their social media regulations.

The impact of social media on children’s mental health has become a global concern, with some US school districts already suing social media companies. The new law is part of a broader effort to address the issue and promote online safety for young users.
