New Zealand Overcomes Afghanistan in Group D Match at ICC Men’s Twenty20 World Cup
In a Group D match of the 2024 ICC Men’s Twenty20 World Cup, New Zealand secured a five-wicket victory over Afghanistan at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai, India. The match marked the beginning of New Zealand’s campaign in the tournament.
Afghanistan batted first and posted a total of 182-6, with Gulbadin Naib scoring 63 runs off 29 balls. The team’s skipper, Rashid Khan, made the decision to bat first. In response, New Zealand faced a top-order wobble but managed to recover with the help of Tim Seifert (65) and Glenn Phillips (42).
Seifert stated that while it was good to start the tournament with some runs, the main focus was on securing the win. The match saw Lockie Ferguson take two wickets in the final powerplay over, reducing Afghanistan’s total to 44-2.
Naib rebuilt the Afghan innings with Sediqullah Atal, and the team went on to score 110 runs in the final 10 overs. New Zealand’s Mujeeb Ur Rahman bowled successive deliveries that dismissed Finn Allen and Rachin Ravindra, putting pressure on the team.
Seifert and Phillips formed a crucial partnership of 74 runs off 47 balls, which put the pressure back on Afghanistan. Rashid Khan removed Phillips but dropped a return catch from Seifert at a critical juncture in the match. The batter went on to hit Mohammed Nabi for two sixes before falling to the off-spinner.
Mark Chapman and Daryl Mitchell contributed to New Zealand’s victory, scoring 28 and 25 runs respectively. Mitchell Santner also scored 17 runs as the team chased down the target with 13 balls to spare. Rashid Khan expressed his disappointment with Afghanistan’s bowling performance, stating that they had not landed the ball in the right areas consistently.
The match marked a positive start for New Zealand in the tournament, and they will look to build on this momentum in their next matches.
