New Zealand Set Sights on First T20 World Cup Title, India Seeks Third
New Zealand captain Mitchell Santner has stated that his team will not mind losing to India in the upcoming T20 World Cup final, which would deny the hosts their third title. The match is scheduled for Sunday at Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad, where over 100,000 fans are expected to attend.
Santner’s side reached the 2021 final but lost to Australia, and they have never won a white-ball World Cup. In the semifinals, New Zealand defeated South Africa by nine wickets after Finn Allen scored the fastest-ever century at the tournament. However, they also lost to South Africa and England earlier in the competition.
India is on a roll with three straight wins and is attempting to become the first team to win back-to-back T20 World Cups and the first to lift the trophy on home soil. The team will face pressure from a packed house plus hundreds of millions watching on TV, according to Santner.
New Zealand all-rounder Glenn Phillips has expressed confidence in his team’s ability to take down India’s star seamer Jasprit Bumrah. Phillips stated that Bumrah is human and can have bad days, just like the rest of the players. He acknowledged Bumrah’s accuracy and ability to bowl yorkers but said that tactics against any bowler are never the same.
The match will be a significant test for New Zealand, who edged into the semifinals on net run rate before stepping up their game against South Africa. Santner has expressed his team’s goal of silencing the crowd and upsetting another big team.
