Nigeria Advances to Knockout Stages with Dominant Win Over Uganda
In Group C of the Africa Cup of Nations, Nigeria secured their spot in the knockout stages for the first time since 2021, defeating Uganda 3-1. The match took place on Tuesday, and Nigeria’s victory maintained their perfect record in the group stage.
Raphael Onyedika scored twice, including his first international goal in four years, while Paul Onuachu also found the back of the net after 28 minutes. Fisayo Dele-Bashiru provided a pass that led to Onuachu’s goal, which was Nigeria’s second score of the match.
Uganda was reduced to 10 men in the 56th minute when substitute goalkeeper Magoola used his hands outside his area to stop a Victor Osimhen shot. Nigeria scored their third goal in the 62nd minute with Onyedika taking Samuel Chukwueze’s pass and drilling his shot low through the legs of Nafian Alionzi.
Onyedika netted his second goal five minutes later, again assisted by Chukwueze. Uganda scored a consolation goal with 15 minutes left as the Nigerian defense momentarily relaxed, allowing Rogers Mato to lift the ball over the keeper and into the net.
In another match in Group C, Tanzania secured their spot in the knockout stages for the first time since 1980, drawing 1-1 with Tunisia. Feisal Salum’s powerful shot three minutes into the second half secured the draw after Ismael Gharbi converted a penalty for Tunisia in the 43rd minute.
Tanzania’s victory marked their maiden appearance in the knockout stage, and they will advance as one of the four best third-placed finishers.
