Nigeria’s AFCON Quarterfinal Match Marred by Speculation Over Player Bonuses and Team Dynamics
Nigeria is set to face Algeria in the Africa Cup of Nations quarterfinal match, with reports of unpaid bonuses and internal team conflicts surrounding star striker Victor Osimhen. The team arrived in Marrakesh on Thursday for their training session, which was followed by a statement from coach Eric Chelle.
Chelle declined to comment on the reports regarding player bonuses, stating that questions should be directed to the Nigeria Football Federation. He emphasized his focus on the upcoming match and expressed confidence in the team’s ability to perform well.
Additionally, there have been reports of an altercation between Osimhen and teammate Ademola Lookman during a recent match against Mozambique. However, both players downplayed the incident, with Lookman describing it as “just football” and calling Osimhen his “brother”. The two players were also seen celebrating together on social media.
The team’s preparations for the match have been affected by these reports, but Chelle remains committed to his job and has expressed confidence in the team’s ability to overcome any challenges. Nigeria is seeking to win its fourth Africa Cup of Nations title, which would help alleviate disappointment from failing to qualify for the World Cup.
In related news, the Nigeria Football Federation still advertises a vacancy for the position of head coach of the men’s team, a year and a day after Chelle was appointed to the role.
