Nigeria: Multiple School Attacks Result in Kidnappings
A coordinated attack on multiple schools in Nigeria’s southwestern Oyo State has resulted in the kidnapping of 39 students and seven teachers. The incident occurred last week at Ahoro Esinele community in Oriire district, targeting a secondary school and two primary schools.
According to officials, including Elisha Olukayode Ogundiya, chairman of the Christian Association of Nigeria in Oyo State, a total of 46 people were taken away following the attacks. The victims include children aged between two and 16 years.
Police described the attack as simultaneous raids on Baptist Nursery and Primary in Yawota, and two other schools in Esiele, resulting in the seizure of pupils and teachers. President Bola Tinubu condemned the incident, stating that the federal government is working with Oyo State to “rescue all the victims.”
Governor Oluseyi Abiodun Makinde reported that one abducted teacher was killed on Sunday, citing a video. Six suspects have been arrested, including alleged informants and logistics suppliers to the kidnappers.
A joint rescue operation by soldiers, police, and local vigilantes was disrupted due to the presence of improvised explosive devices planted by the attackers, leaving several wounded. Those injured are receiving treatment.
The incident is part of a growing concern over mass kidnappings by armed groups in Nigeria, which have become a serious security challenge in recent years.
