Nine Colombian miners die in coal mine blast

Colombia Mine Explosion Kills Nine Workers, Injures Six

A coal mine explosion in Cundinamarca province has resulted in nine fatalities and six injuries, according to the National Mining Agency. The incident occurred on Monday at a legally operated mine in the Sutatausa municipality, approximately 72 kilometers north of Bogota.

The agency had previously warned about potential risks associated with gas buildup at the site, which was identified during an inspection visit on April 9. During this visit, methane and coal dust were detected, posing a danger to miners.

Rescue efforts are currently underway, with authorities assessing gas levels in the mine before conducting operations. The injured have been taken to a local hospital for treatment.

The company operating the mine, Carbonera Los Pinos, has not yet commented on the incident. Cundinamarca Governor Jorge Emilio Rey stated that the explosion was likely caused by a buildup of gases.

According to local authorities, miners were working at least 600 meters underground when the blast occurred. The mining agency has expressed its condolences and support for the families of the victims, citing poor ventilation as a common cause of mining accidents in Colombia.

The incident highlights ongoing safety concerns in the country’s mining industry, particularly with regards to unregulated or poorly maintained mines.
