Two passenger trains collided near Bedford, resulting in multiple injuries and fatalities. According to British Transport Police, more than 80 people received medical treatment following the incident on Friday night. As of Saturday morning, 28 individuals remain hospitalized, with nine in critical condition.
Chief Constable Lucy D’Orsi stated that specialist investigators from the British Transport Police are working with colleagues at the Rail Accident Investigation Branch (RAIB) to gather facts and determine the cause of the crash. Transport Secretary Heidi Alexander emphasized that it is too early to speculate on the incident’s cause, promising a thorough investigation to ensure lessons are learned.
The collision involved two London-bound trains operating on the same track, operated by East Midlands Railway (EMR). The driver of one train died at the scene. Buckingham Palace issued a statement from King Charles, expressing sadness and sending condolences to the deceased driver’s family and injured individuals.
Medical reports indicate that 11 people sustained “very serious” injuries, while 32 suffered serious wounds and 56 others had minor injuries. EMR’s managing director, Will Rogers, described the incident as a “profoundly sad day for the railway community.” The company is fully supporting the RAIB probe. Emergency services dispatched over 20 ambulances, specialist rescue teams, and six air ambulances to the scene.
The investigation into the crash continues, with officials awaiting further information before determining potential contributing factors.
