US Protests Continue as President Trump Takes Office for Second Term
Demonstrators have taken to the streets across the United States for a third round of “No Kings” protests since President Donald Trump’s second term began. The rallies, which are part of a nationwide movement, are expected to draw large crowds in cities such as New York, Los Angeles, and Washington, DC.
According to organizers, more than 3,300 events are planned across all 50 states, with parallel events also taking place internationally in cities like Rome, Paris, and Berlin. The protests aim to rally voters outside of major metropolitan areas, targeting conservative-leaning regions.
The event in the Minneapolis-St Paul area of Minnesota is expected to be a focal point, commemorating the deaths of two US citizens who were shot by federal immigration agents during Operation Metro Surge last year. The operation sparked widespread outrage and calls for reform, leading to dozens of lawsuits being filed.
Senator Bernie Sanders is set to address attendees at the event, while rock icon Bruce Springsteen and folk singer Joan Baez will perform. The protests follow previous events in June and October, which drew millions of people. Trump responded to a previous protest by posting an AI-generated video depicting himself dumping faeces on protesters.
The US is currently in the midst of campaigns for its midterm elections in November, with Trump’s Republican Party seeking to defend its majorities in both chambers of Congress.
