Novak Djokovic defeats Juan Ignacio Londero in Australian Open opener

Novak Djokovic Advances to Australian Open Second Round with Straight-Set Victory

Novak Djokovic, the Serbian tennis player, won his 100th Australian Open match on Monday, defeating Pedro Martinez in a straight-set victory of 6-3, 6-2, 6-2. The win marked Djokovic’s latest step towards a record 25th Grand Slam title.

Djokovic, ranked fourth in the world, faced off against Martinez, who is ranked 71st. The match took place at Rod Laver Arena and lasted two hours. After the match, Djokovic expressed his enthusiasm for playing on the Australian Open court, stating that it was his favorite surface to compete on.

In the match, Djokovic dominated from the start, taking a 3-0 lead in the first set. He broke Martinez’s serve early in the second set and maintained control throughout the match. The only moment of concern for Djokovic fans came when he stretched his right hamstring between games in the third set.

Djokovic will face Italian qualifier Francesco Maestrelli in the next round. To break the record for most Grand Slam titles, Djokovic would need to surpass Margaret Court’s 24 major championships. He has been stuck on 24 major titles since winning the US Open in 2023 and reached the quarterfinals last year before retiring due to injury.

Djokovic also made history by equalling Roger Federer’s record for most men’s singles appearances at Grand Slam tournaments, with a total of 81 appearances.
