Novak Djokovic Prepares for Australian Open Despite Rivalry with Alcaraz and Sinner
Tennis star Novak Djokovic is set to compete in the upcoming Australian Open, despite facing stiff competition from young rivals Carlos Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner. Speaking on Saturday ahead of the tournament, Djokovic acknowledged the strong performances of his opponents, stating that they have earned their place as dominant forces in men’s tennis.
Djokovic, who is seeking a 25th Grand Slam singles title, has refined his approach for the Australian Open and will not participate in any scheduled tuneup tournaments due to concerns over his physical condition. He withdrew from the Adelaide tournament earlier this month after experiencing setbacks with injuries.
The 38-year-old Djokovic has a record of 24 major championships, tied with Margaret Court for the most in tennis history. He last won a major title at the 2023 US Open and will face Pedro Martinez of Spain in his opening match on Monday.
Djokovic’s focus is on staying pain-free and competing at his best, despite being hampered by injuries in recent years. He has taken a “now-or-never type of mentality” to his approach, recognizing that he must excel at his best to succeed.
In the past, Djokovic has spoken about the challenges posed by Alcaraz and Sinner, who have split the eight major titles since his last win in 2023. Djokovic will be seeded fourth and will only meet one of his rivals in the semifinals.
Djokovic recently parted ways with the Professional Tennis Players Association (PTPA), a group he co-founded in 2020 to provide representation for independent contractors in tennis. He cited a desire to distance himself from the organization’s current direction, but expressed support for the concept and wishes for its continued success.
