Novak Djokovic Withdraws from Madrid Open Due to Shoulder Injury
Serbian tennis player Novak Djokovic will not participate in the upcoming Madrid Open tournament, citing a shoulder injury that has been affecting him throughout his recent performances. The 38-year-old, who is currently ranked fourth in the ATP rankings, had expressed hopes of competing in the event but ultimately decided against it.
Djokovic’s decision comes as he continues to recover from an ongoing shoulder issue that forced him to withdraw from several tournaments earlier this year. He has played only two events so far in 2024, the Australian Open and Indian Wells, raising concerns about his fitness level ahead of the French Open, which is scheduled to begin on May 24.
In a statement posted on X, Djokovic confirmed that he will not be competing in Madrid due to his ongoing injury. He had previously expressed physical struggles with the issue during an interview with Spanish broadcaster Movistar+ at a EuroLeague basketball game in Madrid earlier this week.
Djokovic’s withdrawal from the Madrid Open means that he will miss out on another opportunity to compete in one of the most prestigious clay-court tournaments before the French Open. The Serbian player is scheduled to compete in the Italian Open in Rome next, where he will bid for a record 25th Grand Slam title.
