UN Chief Warns of Decline in Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty’s Influence
The United Nations chief has expressed concerns about the declining effectiveness of the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT), which is the most comprehensive arms-control agreement globally. The treaty, with 191 signatories, aims to prevent countries without nuclear weapons from acquiring them and for those that do possess them to relinquish their arsenal.
Recent years have seen a decline in NPT implementation, prompting warnings from experts and diplomats about the heightened risk of a nuclear arms race. In response, the UN chief has called for a review of the treaty to potentially introduce stricter measures to mitigate the threat.
The US and Israel’s ongoing conflict with Iran is also being scrutinized globally. Diplomats and policymakers are examining the potential implications of this conflict on international security.
Tariq Rauf, former head of verification and security policy coordination at the International Atomic Energy Agency, and Kelsey Davenport, director for nonproliferation policy at the US Arms Control Association, will discuss the NPT’s effectiveness and the risks associated with a nuclear arms race. Seyed Hossein Mousavian, former Iranian nuclear negotiator, will share his insights on the conflict between Iran and the US-Israel.
The discussion aims to provide a comprehensive understanding of the current situation and potential solutions to address the challenges posed by the NPT and the ongoing conflict in the Middle East.
