NYPD Responds to Protest Outside NYC Mayor Mamdanis Home with Explosive Device

Two men arrested after device thrown during protest outside NYC Mayor’s home

The New York City Police Department (NYPD) announced on Sunday that two individuals have been taken into custody following an incident at a protest outside the residence of Mayor Zohran Mamdani. The event occurred at Gracie Mansion, where far-right demonstrators led by activist Jake Lang clashed with counterprotesters.

According to NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch, a preliminary analysis has determined that an “improved explosive device” was thrown during the protest. The device, which contained nuts, bolts, and screws, as well as a hobby fuse, did not explode at the scene but was later found to be capable of causing serious injury or death.

Two men, identified as Emir Balat and Ibrahim Kayumi, were arrested at the scene in connection with the incident. Police had previously stated that Balat was among counterprotesters when he threw a smoking device at a barrier near police. A second device was found on the ground after Balat dropped it while fleeing.

Mayor Mamdani condemned Lang’s protest and described the violence as “even more disturbing.” He also referred to Lang as a “white supremacist,” stating that such hate has no place in New York City. The FBI is assisting with the investigation into the incident.
