One person killed in Barcelona rail accident following Spanish train disaster

Train Collision in Catalonia Leaves 37 Injured, One Dead

A commuter train crashed into a collapsed retaining wall outside Barcelona, injuring 37 people, including four who are seriously injured. The incident occurred on Tuesday in the municipality of Gelida, approximately 40km west of Barcelona.

According to Claudi Gallardo, inspector for the fire service in Catalonia, one person has died and all passengers have been removed from the site. Spain’s railway operator ADIF reported that heavy rains likely caused the wall to collapse onto the tracks.

This incident comes two days after a separate train collision in Andalusia killed at least 42 people. The latest crash is part of three days of mourning for the victims of Sunday’s deadly accident, which occurred near Adamuz, Cordoba province.

On Sunday, a train carrying 289 passengers derailed and crashed into an incoming train, resulting in significant damage to the second train. Spanish authorities have found a broken section of track that may be related to the accident, but further investigation is needed to determine its cause.

Spanish Minister for Transport Oscar Puente has stated that officials are exploring various hypotheses regarding the incident. The government and rail authorities will need to address concerns about safety following this latest crash.
