A fire broke out at the Habshan gas facility in the United Arab Emirates after debris from an air defense interception sparked two blazes. According to local authorities, the incident resulted in one death and four injuries. The Abu Dhabi Media Office stated that the Egyptian national who lost his life was evacuated during the site’s evacuation process.
The facility, which is the country’s largest natural gas processing site, suffered significant damage as a result of the incident. An assessment of the damage is ongoing. The incident occurred amid a surge in attacks on the UAE by Iranian missiles and drones since February 28.
According to reports from Riyadh, at least 18 ballistic missiles, four cruise missiles, and 47 drones were fired from Iran at the country over the previous 24 hours. This marks one of the most intense days of attacks on the UAE.
The Gulf Cooperation Council has called on the United Nations Security Council to take measures to end Iranian attacks on the region. The council’s Secretary-General also emphasized the need to protect maritime corridors and ensure uninterrupted navigation through strategic waterways in the region.
Iran has effectively halted traffic through the Strait of Hormuz, a critical waterway that transports about one-fifth of the world’s oil and liquefied natural gas supplies. This has led to an increase in oil prices.
