A 20-year-old Texas man has been charged with attempted murder and arson in connection with an incident involving OpenAI CEO Sam Altman’s San Francisco residence. Daniel Moreno-Gama, from Houston, Texas, is facing multiple charges following the alleged attack on Altman’s home last week.
According to authorities, Moreno-Gama allegedly threw a Molotov cocktail at Altman’s residence around 3:30am local time on Friday. The suspect was later captured on a security camera hurling an incendiary device at the scene. Police also recovered incendiary devices, a container of kerosene, and other items from the suspect.
Moreno-Gama is also facing federal charges related to attempted damage and destruction of property by means of explosives, as well as possession of an unregistered firearm. The suspect’s motives for the attack are unclear, but authorities have stated that they will prosecute the case to the fullest extent of the law.
The incident has sparked a reaction from Altman himself, who wrote a blog post after the attack criticizing the level of public debate surrounding artificial intelligence and tech executives. Authorities in San Francisco have also spoken out about the need for de-escalation in rhetoric and tactics related to the topic.
In a statement, District Attorney Brooke Jenkins said that Moreno-Gama’s actions were an attempt on Altman’s life and posed an extreme danger to those around him. The suspect faces the possibility of life imprisonment under the charges.
