Confederation of African Football Opens Investigation into AFCON Quarterfinal Incident
The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has launched an investigation into incidents that occurred during Saturday’s Africa Cup of Nations quarterfinal match between Algeria and Nigeria. The game, which took place in Marrakesh, Morocco, ended with a 2-0 victory for Nigeria.
According to CAF, the governing body has referred the matter to its disciplinary board for further investigation. If found guilty, individuals involved may face disciplinary action. In a statement, CAF condemned “any inappropriate behaviour” during matches, including actions targeting referees or match officials.
The referee, Issa Sy, was shielded from Algeria’s team staff and escorted off the field after tensions escalated on the pitch. Video footage showed Sy being pursued by media personnel in the mixed zone as he left the field. The Algerian Football Federation has also filed a complaint with CAF regarding Sy’s performance, citing concerns over his refereeing decisions.
Additionally, CAF is investigating incidents from Friday’s match between Morocco and Cameroon, which ended with a 2-0 victory for Morocco. The investigation will examine the officiating in that game, including the refusal to award Cameroon a penalty during the second half.
The Super Eagles are set to face Morocco in their semifinal match on Wednesday.
