US Actor Robert Duvall Dies at 95

Robert Duvall, a renowned American actor, has passed away at the age of 95, according to his wife’s announcement on Facebook. Luciana Duvall shared a statement expressing her gratitude for her husband’s dedication to his craft and the human spirit he portrayed in his roles.

Duvall was known for his distinctive performances in various films, including The Godfather, Apocalypse Now, and Tender Mercies. He played notable characters such as Tom Hagen, Lieutenant Colonel Bull Meechum, and a washed-up country singer in Tender Mercies, for which he won the Academy Award for Best Actor.

Born to a US Navy admiral and an amateur actress, Duvall grew up in Annapolis, Maryland. After graduating from Principia College in Illinois and serving in the US Army, he moved to New York City, where he befriended actors Dustin Hoffman and Gene Hackman while studying acting.

Duvall’s early career included television appearances and his first film role as Boo Radley in To Kill a Mockingbird. He went on to work with notable directors such as Francis Ford Coppola and Horton Foote, who wrote the screenplay for Tender Mercies. Duvall also appeared in numerous other films, including Apocalypse Now, where he played Lieutenant Colonel Bill Kilgore.

In addition to his acting career, Duvall also ventured into filmmaking, writing, directing, and winning an Oscar nomination for The Apostle. He later made a film about the tango, Assassination Tango, which showcased his passion for the dance and Argentina, where he met his fourth wife, Luciana Pedraza.

Duvall spent time in various locations, including Los Angeles, Argentina, and a farm in Virginia, where he converted a barn into a tango dance hall.
