US State Department Reports Significant Increase in Visa Revocations
The US State Department has reported that over 100,000 visas have been revoked since President Donald Trump’s return to office last year. This represents a more than 150% increase from the same period in 2024.
According to the department, the majority of visa revocations were due to “encounters with US law enforcement for criminal activity”. The exact circumstances surrounding these encounters are not clear.
The State Department has also reported that 8,000 students and 2,500 specialized workers have had their visas revoked. These numbers include individuals who were detained by law enforcement for various offenses, including driving under the influence, assault, and theft.
The administration has claimed to have overseen over 2.5 million voluntary departures and deportations since Trump’s return to office. However, some of these deportations have included immigrants with valid visas, raising questions about due process and human rights.
In response to concerns about visa vetting, the State Department has launched a Continuous Vetting Center aimed at ensuring compliance with US laws among foreign nationals on American soil.
The department has also ordered US diplomats to be vigilant against visa applicants deemed hostile to the US or with a history of political activism. This includes monitoring social media activity and conducting expanded screening processes.
These measures reflect the administration’s efforts to restrict who is allowed into the country. The State Department will continue to deport individuals deemed a threat to American citizens, as stated in its official policy.
