Lebanon Experiences Significant Displacement Amid Escalation in Israeli Military Presence
Over 250,000 people have left Lebanon in the past two weeks, with approximately 125,000 crossing into Syria. This number represents a significant increase since late February, with a 40% rise in displacement cases.
According to reports, Lebanese residents south of the Zahrani River are being ordered to relocate north immediately. The Israeli military has issued this directive, stating that failure to comply may result in endangerment due to military activity. This order affects an area spanning over 1,470 square kilometers, covering more than 100 towns and villages.
The Norwegian Refugee Council estimates that nearly 14% of Lebanon’s territory is under the impact of these orders. The Israeli military has also increased its presence in southern Lebanon, aiming to establish a buffer zone. Humanitarian concerns have risen as a result, with many families facing difficulties due to overcrowded shelters and limited access to basic necessities.
Data from the International Organization for Migration indicates that over 1 million people have been displaced, with 132,742 residing in collective shelters. The crisis has led to an influx of refugees into Syria, with nearly half of those fleeing being children. Approximately 7,000 Lebanese citizens have also crossed into Syria.
Infrastructure disruptions, including the destruction of bridges across the Litani River, have further complicated the situation for those attempting to flee.
