Oxford Union President Speaks Out on Campaign Experience
In December 2025, [Name] was elected president of the Oxford Union, a position held by no Palestinian before them. The election saw high turnout compared to previous contests.
During their campaign, [Name] openly discussed their background as a Palestinian from Gaza and how it has influenced their views on representation and debate. However, this openness led to attempts to discredit them based solely on who they are.
Reports questioned [Name]’s suitability for office without engaging with their platform or record. These reports were part of a wider smear campaign that portrayed [Name] as an extremist and security concern. False rumours circulated that supporters of the campaign could face consequences, including visa loss or security watchlists.
Reputable outlets adopted these narratives without conducting basic due diligence. In some cases, they presented insinuations as fact to depict [Name] as unfit for office. An email from the Jewish Chronicle sought a response from [Name], which set out claims and insinuations about extremism.
The email included a claim of a supposed family link to a Hamas member, despite this being incorrect. The suggestion relied on a common first name in the Arab world paired with a widely shared family name from Gaza. [Name]’s father, Mohammed Elrayess, is a scientist at Qatar University and is alive.
Other points raised in the email concerned descriptions of [Name]’s speech and activities, reframed to appear suspicious. These included a social media post mourning the killing of a Palestinian journalist, and involvement in a documentary about pro-Palestine demonstrations.
A speech made by [Name] at the Oxford Union in November 2024 was also targeted, with objections focused on their participation rather than the substance of what they said.
