India’s Government Announces Relaxation of Visa Rules for Pakistani Athletes
In a statement released on Wednesday, India’s sport ministry clarified its stance on allowing Pakistani athletes to visit the country. According to the ministry, Pakistani players and teams will be permitted to participate in multilateral events hosted by India, but bilateral events remain off-limits.
The ministry stated that it follows international sports bodies’ practices and prioritizes the interests of Indian sportspersons. This decision is also influenced by India’s emergence as a credible venue for hosting international sports events, including the 2030 Commonwealth Games in Ahmedabad and bids for the 2036 Olympics and 2038 Asian Games.
In contrast, bilateral sports events between India and Pakistan are not permitted. The ministry explained that Indian teams will not participate in competitions in Pakistan, nor will Pakistani teams be allowed to play in India.
To facilitate international sporting engagements, the government has also announced simplification of visa procedures for sportspersons and officials from participating countries. Additionally, office bearers of international sports governing bodies will receive multi-entry visas.
These developments come after a recent military conflict between India and Pakistan, which led to a freeze in bilateral cricket matches since 2012-13. The two nuclear-armed neighbors have largely competed at neutral venues during this period.
