US-Iran Negotiations with Pakistani Mediation Continue
Negotiations between the United States and Iran, mediated by Pakistan, have been ongoing despite facing significant challenges. Recent statements from US President Donald Trump and shuttle diplomacy carried out by senior Pakistani officials in regional capitals have raised hopes for a potential resolution to the conflict.
On Thursday, Trump stated that the war was “about to end” due to progress made on resolving issues between the two countries. He also mentioned that talks would resume soon and potentially travel to Islamabad if a final agreement were signed there. The remarks were accompanied by intensive diplomatic activities in the region, including a surprise visit by Pakistan’s army chief, Field Marshal Asim Munir, to Tehran for talks with Iranian officials.
Pakistan’s Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has also been engaged in a three-country tour to brief leaders on the latest developments in the talks. This indicates that diplomatic activity is ongoing in preparation for another round of direct talks between Washington and Tehran.
The ceasefire between Lebanon and Israel, announced on April 8, has boosted optimism for a potential peace agreement between Washington and Tehran. Iran welcomed the truce, which received global backing. However, controversy arose shortly after the ceasefire was announced, with differing interpretations of its scope.
Recent negotiations held in Islamabad on April 12 marked the highest-level direct talks between the US and Iran in over four decades. The talks were attended by high-level delegations from both sides, indicating their seriousness about finding a way out of the conflict. While the outcome of the talks was not conclusive, diplomatic engagement continued through Pakistan, with efforts to persuade both parties to show flexibility and maintain back-channel communications.
The situation remains fluid, with ongoing negotiations and diplomatic activity in the region. The future trajectory of the talks is uncertain, but the possibility of a resolution to the conflict remains on the table.
