Pakistan Ends Boycott of India Match at T20 World Cup After Weeks of Negotiations
A resolution has been reached in the ongoing dispute between Pakistan and India regarding their match at the T20 World Cup, bringing an end to a major crisis in the cricket world. The agreement was made after over a week of negotiations and meetings.
The dispute began on January 3 when the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) instructed the Kolkata Knight Riders to remove Bangladeshi fast bowler Mustafizur Rahman from their squad for the Indian Premier League (IPL). This move came amid tensions between India and Bangladesh. The following day, the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) announced that its team would not travel to India for the World Cup due to safety and security concerns.
The International Cricket Council (ICC) attempted to persuade Bangladesh to play their games in India, but ultimately decided to relocate Bangladesh’s fixtures to Sri Lanka. This decision led to Bangladesh being kicked out of the World Cup and replaced by Scotland on January 24.
Pakistan swiftly supported Bangladesh, calling the ICC’s decision “double standards.” The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) then announced that it would decide its team’s fate at the World Cup after consulting with the government.
One week later, Pakistan’s government announced that it would not take the field against India. This move was made in solidarity with Bangladesh. The ICC initially warned Pakistan against carrying out its boycott but eventually initiated a series of meetings and negotiations to persuade them otherwise.
On Monday, the ICC stated that its dialogue with the PCB and BCB was “constructive and congenial” and agreed that Bangladesh would not face any penalties or sanctions for refusing to play in India. The ICC also promised to host an event in Bangladesh between 2028 and 2031.
Within an hour of this announcement, Pakistan’s government ordered the cricket team to take the field against India on February 15.
