Field Marshal Asim Munir Returns to Pakistan Amid Ongoing US-Iran Diplomacy Efforts
Field Marshal Asim Munir has departed Tehran, wrapping up his three-day visit to the country as part of Pakistan’s diplomatic efforts to advance a negotiated settlement between the United States and Iran. The Pakistani army chief met with Iranian leadership and peace negotiators during his visit.
Meanwhile, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif returned from Turkey on Saturday, concluding his three-country trip that aimed to push the peace process. Sharif departed a diplomacy forum in Antalya alongside Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar.
The visit by Munir demonstrated Pakistan’s commitment to facilitating a negotiated settlement and promoting peace, stability, and prosperity. He held talks with Iran’s president, foreign minister, parliament speaker, and head of Iran’s military central command centre.
Last week, Iranian Parliament Speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf and Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi led the Iranian delegation to Islamabad for face-to-face talks with the US, marking the highest level of contact between Washington and Tehran in decades. The talks ended without an agreement, but diplomacy has continued.
Pakistan’s Prime Minister Sharif visited Saudi Arabia, Qatar, and Turkey as part of his diplomatic efforts. His trip concluded on Saturday, with statements from both officials confirming his departure from Antalya.
The US-Iran conflict remains unresolved, with a ceasefire set to expire on April 22. Diplomatic efforts have intensified, with Pakistan intensifying contacts with regional and global leaders in an effort to sustain momentum towards a deal. The Trump administration has expressed support for Pakistan’s leadership, with Donald Trump praising Munir as “doing a great job”.
