Spanish Footballer Waved Palestinian Flag in Barcelona Parade
Lamine Yamal, an 18-year-old member of Spanish football club Barcelona, was seen waving a large Palestine flag during the team’s open-top bus parade on Monday. The event took place hours after Barcelona secured their second consecutive La Liga championship title with a 2-0 win over Real Madrid.
Yamal missed Sunday’s match due to an injury but joined his teammates in the parade the following day. Video clips of his actions quickly went viral on social media, with many praising the young player for his gesture.
The Palestinian flag has been raised by protesters and pro-Palestine activists in hundreds of cities worldwide since October 2023, as a symbol of solidarity with Palestinians in Gaza who have faced conflict with Israel. The Israeli government has reported killing over 72,740 Palestinians since October 2023, including 854 during a ceasefire.
Yamal’s actions were seen by many as an act of support for the Palestinian cause. Some activists believe he has done more to raise awareness for the issue than many others. Barcelona head coach Hansi Flick spoke with Yamal about his actions, saying “If you want to do that, it’s your decision, you’re old enough.”
The incident sparked a response from various individuals and groups, including Palestinian football expert Bassil Mikdadi, who praised Yamal for highlighting the true spirit of Barcelona football club. The Boycott, Divestment, and Sanctions (BDS) movement also appreciated Yamal’s gesture, saying “Sport has the power to make visible what the world must not forget.”
