Palestinian Local Elections Set to Take Place on April 25
On April 25, Palestinians will cast their votes in local elections to select representatives for municipal and village councils, with four-year terms. The elections follow years of repeated postponements of national votes, with the last legislative election held in 2006.
In cities across the occupied West Bank, including Ramallah, Al-Bireh, and Nablus, billboards featuring local candidates line the streets, while in villages, posters of candidates have been erected in public spaces. The elections are taking place across 420 local authorities, with over one million eligible voters.
The elections come after a period of limited political participation for Palestinians, who have not held national elections since 2006. Voting is set to occur across the occupied West Bank, but in Gaza, it will be limited to a single municipality: Deir al-Balah.
The Palestinian Authority, established through the Oslo Accords, has been responsible for governing daily life under occupation. The authority’s structure was designed to manage Palestinian resistance and contain institutional frameworks that could be monitored by Israel. As a result, Palestinians have been subject to Israeli control and oversight in various aspects of their lives.
In Gaza, Israeli control is exercised through military force and policy enforcement. In the occupied West Bank, it operates through a combination of military force and policy structures enforced with systematic violence. The Palestinian Authority’s role has effectively reduced the costs of occupation for Israel by taking on responsibilities that fall under international law.
The local elections will take place in 420 local authorities, but Palestinians with Israeli citizenship or holding Jerusalem IDs are excluded from participating. More than half of the Palestinian population lives in diaspora, and their voting rights are also limited.
The elections will provide an opportunity for Palestinians to exercise a form of political participation, despite the constraints imposed by the occupation. The event is set to take place across the occupied West Bank, with voting scheduled to occur on April 25.
