Palestinian Football Association Appeals FIFA Ruling to International Sports Court

FIFA Congress Attendance Impacted by Visa Issues and Dispute Over Israeli Settlements

Visa issues affecting several delegations have added to tensions ahead of the upcoming FIFA Congress in Vancouver, Canada. The Palestinian Football Association (PFA) has filed an appeal with the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) against FIFA’s decision not to sanction Israel over clubs based in occupied West Bank settlements.

The PFA has long argued that clubs based in Israeli settlements in the occupied West Bank should not compete in leagues run by the Israel Football Association (IFA). FIFA cited the unresolved legal status of the occupied West Bank under public international law as the reason for its decision. The PFA Vice President, Susan Shalabi, stated that the organization will continue to pursue justice through the appeal process.

Visa problems have also affected several Palestinian and other delegations, including representatives from the PFA. Despite receiving an electronic travel authorization, some members of the delegation were initially denied visas. However, pressure from various levels, including the media and community members, led to their issuance. The PFA president was unable to obtain a visa in time for the congress, but is expected to arrive later.

The situation has also affected other countries, with Iran’s football association reportedly facing similar issues. Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada has stated that it will look into the matter.

Shalabi emphasized the dire state of Palestinian football, particularly in Gaza, where many football structures have been destroyed or rendered unusable. The suspension of professional leagues and the loss of hundreds of young players have had a significant impact on the sport.
