US Announces Establishment of Foreign Executive Committee for Gaza Governance
A US presidential envoy has announced the formation of a foreign executive committee and a peace board to oversee the provisional administration of Gaza. The committee is composed of Palestinian technocrats, as requested by Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.
The administration unveiled its plan for the foreign executive committee, which will be responsible for implementing reforms in the Palestinian Authority (PA). According to Trump’s “peace plan,” these reforms must be completed before any role can be played by Hamas or Fatah-dominated PA in Gaza.
Fatah has expressed concerns over the proposal, stating that it may limit its ability to govern the Gaza Strip. The US administration has emphasized that the foreign executive committee will oversee governance in Gaza without involving Hamas or Fatah.
The setup reflects Netanyahu’s preference for a Palestinian-led government without involvement from Hamas or Fatah. However, this approach is seen as unrealistic by some Palestinians, who argue that any governing structure must take into account the national aspirations of the Palestinian people.
Historically, various Palestinian national movements and revolutions have emerged, united by a rejection of Israeli colonial presence. The two most prominent political components of Palestinian society, Fatah and Hamas, remain committed to the Palestinian cause and rights.
The US administration has attempted to bypass this reality by imposing artificial facts on the ground. Israel has sought “local alternatives” for governance in Gaza, empowering certain individuals and groups, including those with extensive criminal records.
In recent years, Israeli attempts to engage with other clans and empower them have ended badly. Prominent families and clans have publicly condemned individual members who have collaborated with Israel, withdrawing protection and ostracizing the collaborators.
