A Winter Storm Threatens Gaza’s Tents as Thousands Remain Homeless
A winter storm is battering the Gaza Strip, leaving thousands of Palestinians without shelter. The storm has caused widespread damage to tents, which have been used by nearly 900,000 people since late 2023 due to the ongoing conflict in the region.
According to reports, a wall collapsed on Sunday in the Remal neighborhood, killing a 30-year-old woman named Alaa Marwan Juha. Several members of her family were also injured in the incident. The storm has caused flooding and strong winds, which have destroyed thousands of tents and left many people without access to basic necessities.
The Palestinian NGOs Network (PNGO) has warned that the severe weather conditions are exacerbating an already dire humanitarian situation. Amjad Shawa, director of PNGO, has called for urgent action to provide mobile homes and equipment to repair damaged sewage networks.
Shawa stated that tents do not offer adequate protection against flooding and that the international community should pressure Israel to lift restrictions on life-saving aid. The Gaza Strip is currently facing a severe shortage of medicine and medical supplies, which is further straining the healthcare system.
The storm has also caused at least 15 deaths this month due to hypothermia, according to authorities in Gaza. Emergency workers have warned people not to stay in damaged buildings, but many residents are without alternative shelter options.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu left Tel Aviv for the United States on Sunday, as negotiations continue over a potential ceasefire agreement. However, Israel continues to block humanitarian aid to Gaza, despite agreements stipulated in the first phase of the ceasefire.
The situation remains dire, with over 414 Palestinians killed and 1,142 wounded since the truce went into effect. The conflict has resulted in at least 71,266 Palestinian deaths and 171,219 injuries since October 2023.
