Palestinians face continued denial of right to return after 78 years

Palestinian Refugees Still Await Resolution on Right of Return

Seventy-eight years have passed since thousands of Palestinians were forcibly displaced from their homes by Zionist militias. Today, many of these individuals’ grandchildren continue to reside in refugee camps.

According to historical records, the displacement occurred in 1948, during the early stages of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. The event is widely regarded as a pivotal moment in the ongoing dispute between Israelis and Palestinians over land ownership and identity.

In recent years, the issue of Palestinian refugees’ right of return has remained unresolved. Many Palestinians who were displaced at the time continue to seek recognition of their ancestral ties to the land they were forced to leave behind.

To better understand the significance of this issue for those affected, Al Jazeera’s Leila Warah recently visited Aida refugee camp in the West Bank. There, she spoke with individuals who have lived in the camp for generations and sought to clarify what the right of return means to them.

Warah’s conversation with refugees revealed a deep-seated desire for recognition and compensation for past injustices. Many expressed frustration at the lack of progress on this issue, which they believe is essential to achieving a lasting resolution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.
