Panamas Participation in the 2026 FIFA World Cup Explained

Panama to Compete in 2026 FIFA World Cup

Panama has qualified for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, marking their second appearance at the tournament in eight years. The team will compete against top nations from around the world, including England, Croatia, and Ghana.

To secure their spot at the World Cup, Panama underwent a two-round qualification process. In the first round, they topped their group with a perfect record, winning all four matches. They then advanced to the second round, where they drew alongside Suriname, Guatemala, and El Salvador. Despite having just six points after four match days, Panama found their stride in the final match, posting a 3-2 win against Guatemala and a 3-0 triumph over El Salvador.

Panama made their World Cup debut at the 2018 edition in Russia, where they finished bottom of their group. However, their campaign was notable for Felipe Baloy’s historic strike against England, which remains Panama’s only World Cup goal to date.

Since then, Panama have emerged as the top-ranked team in Central America, with impressive runs to the 2023 CONCACAF Gold Cup final and 2025 Nations League final. The team is currently ranked 33rd globally.

Panama will be drawn into Group L, which is considered one of the most challenging groups at the tournament. They will compete against England, Croatia, and Ghana in their group stage matches, with two games scheduled to take place in Canada and one in the United States.

Head coach Thomas Christiansen has been in charge of Panama since 2020, leading the team to several notable achievements, including semifinal finishes in the 2023 and 2024 Nations League. Before taking the reins of the national team, Christiansen held coaching positions across the world, including spells with Leeds United and Union SG.

Christiansen expressed his excitement about competing in the World Cup for the first time as a coach, stating that it will be an “incredible moment” and a “dream come true.” The team’s squad includes experienced players such as Jose Fajardo and Puma, who were joint top scorers during the qualification phase with three goals each.
