Paris and Lyon Prepare for Potential Olympic Ice Hockey Venue

French Organisers Explore Alternative Venues for Ice Hockey Due to Political Deadlock

The 2030 Winter Olympics organising committee has announced that they are considering alternative locations for ice hockey due to a political deadlock involving the city of Nice. The French Alps project, which was initially set to take place in Nice, is facing opposition from the city’s newly elected mayor, Eric Ciotti.

Ciotti, who was elected last month, has refused to allow the resident football club to lose access to its stadium, Allianz Arena, for months due to the games. The committee had planned to use the stadium as a temporary hockey rink, but this plan has been put on hold.

The committee has worked with officials from Nice and the French government to find alternative solutions. They have studied other stadiums in Paris and Lyon, which could potentially host ice hockey events. According to the committee, technical analyses have highlighted the limitations of using existing facilities due to high costs and logistical challenges.

Edgar Grospiron, the leader of the organising committee, stated that the committee is exploring options for hosting conditions that meet their requirements. The results of these explorations will be presented to the executive board on May 11, with final venues expected to be confirmed in June.

The Paris Entertainment Company has submitted a bid to host ice hockey at Adidas Arena and Accor Arena, which were used during the 2024 Paris Summer Games. Other ice events scheduled in Nice remain unchanged, including a second competition ice rink for skating planned at Nice’s exhibition centre.
