Pennsylvania Primary Winner Chris Rabb Seeks Midterm Victory
Chris Rabb, a state lawmaker from Pennsylvania, won the primary election in his congressional district, securing nearly 44% of the vote. His victory is expected to solidify his position as the Democratic nominee for the midterm elections.
Rabb’s primary campaign focused on progressive issues, including opposition to the political machinery that influences local politics and a commitment to recognizing Israel’s actions in Gaza as a “genocide.” He has pledged to join 12 current members of Congress in signing a resolution acknowledging the Nakba. Rabb’s stance on these issues set him apart from his opponents, State Senator Sharif Street and pediatric surgeon Ala Stanford.
The primary election saw all candidates emphasize their progressive credentials, with Rabb being the most far-left. Street, who would have been Philadelphia’s first Muslim member of Congress, faced criticism for a lack of clarity on the issue of Israel’s actions in Gaza. Stanford, endorsed by outgoing Representative Dwight Evans, also received support from various groups.
The outcome of the primary has been seen as a barometer for Democrats’ progressive wing. The Pennsylvania Working Families Party stated that the election was about choosing “bold, working-class leadership” and an end to the status quo. Rabb’s victory comes after a tumultuous primary season, with some progressives facing challenges from pro-Israel lobby groups.
Rabb has been endorsed by prominent progressive figures, including Representatives Ocasio-Cortez, Omar, and Senator Van Hollen. The Socialist Democrats of America credited their ground operation for Rabb’s win, stating they would support him in his efforts to abolish ICE, free Palestine, and pass Medicare for All.
