OpenAI CEO Sam Altman has announced that his company has reached a deal with the US Department of Defense following concerns raised by previous contractor Anthropic about the military’s use of artificial intelligence technology.
According to Altman, OpenAI made the agreement after the Defense Department demonstrated its commitment to safety. The terms of the deal include assurances that OpenAI’s technology will not be used for “domestic mass surveillance” or for “autonomous weapon systems”. Instead, humans will take responsibility for the use of force.
The announcement comes amid reports that US President Donald Trump has ordered federal agencies to stop using Anthropic’s technology. Anthropic’s CEO Dario Amodei had previously stated that his company could not accede to certain demands from the Pentagon due to concerns about domestic mass surveillance and autonomous weapons.
It is also reported that Anthropic’s AI software was used by the US military in January to aid in the abduction of Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro. The company had implemented safeguards to prevent its technology from being used for such purposes.
Human rights advocates have raised concerns about the use of unregulated AI models by militaries, including the Israeli army in its operations in Gaza. In this context, Altman stated that OpenAI remains committed to serving humanity and working towards positive change.
The deal between OpenAI and the US Department of Defense is seen as a significant development in the company’s efforts to address concerns about the use of its technology by military forces.
