Philadelphias Democratic Primary Explores Limits of US Progressivism

Four candidates are vying for the Democratic nomination in Pennsylvania’s third congressional district, which encompasses much of Philadelphia’s urban core. The primary election is scheduled to take place on Tuesday.

The four candidates include state Representative Chris Rabb, state Senator Sharif Street, pediatric surgeon Ala Stanford, and lawyer Shaun Griffith. All four campaigns focus on progressive issues such as expanding healthcare, affordability, and housing.

According to Marc Stier, a former director of the Pennsylvania Policy Center, there are few differences in the candidates’ platforms. “They’re all opposed to Donald Trump,” Stier stated. “They’re all talking about civil rights, healthcare, and voting rights.”

The primary has drawn national attention, with endorsements from top Democrats. Local experts and leaders have noted that the divisions between the candidates come down to a duel between ideals and pragmatism.

Pennsylvania’s third congressional district is considered one of the most left-leaning areas in the US. The district was 40 percentage points more Democratic than the national average in the most recent presidential election, making it a key party stronghold in a pivotal swing state.

The primary has been marked by a heated contest among the candidates, with no incumbent to lead the pack. Surveys conducted by the candidates or their supporters show a volatile three-way contest. A poll sponsored by 314 Action found Ala Stanford leading with 28 percent of voter support, followed by Chris Rabb at 23 percent and Sharif Street at 16 percent.

Each candidate has positioned themselves as the Democrat who will shake up the status quo and deliver results. The candidates have highlighted their unique qualities, with Ala Stanford campaigning as a political outsider and pediatric surgeon, Shaun Griffith as a lawyer, Sharif Street as a state senator backed by party leadership, and Chris Rabb as a democratic socialist.
