Philippine Senator Ronald Dela Rosa Flees ICC Detention Order
Senator Ronald Dela Rosa has sought refuge in the Philippine parliament after police attempted to detain him on Monday, following an arrest warrant issued by the International Criminal Court (ICC). The ICC had requested Dela Rosa’s extradition over allegations related to his involvement in former President Rodrigo Duterte’s anti-drug campaign.
According to reports, prosecutors claim that the drug war, which was implemented during Duterte’s presidency, resulted in the deaths of tens of thousands of people. Dela Rosa is among several individuals who have been implicated in the conflict.
On Monday, police sought to apprehend Dela Rosa at his residence, but he managed to evade capture and took refuge in the parliament building. The ICC had issued a warrant for Dela Rosa’s arrest on charges related to alleged war crimes committed during the drug war.
Dela Rosa has not commented publicly on the allegations against him or his involvement in the anti-drug campaign. The Philippine government has also declined to comment on the matter, citing ongoing investigations and legal proceedings.
The ICC arrest warrant is a formal request for Dela Rosa’s extradition to face trial at the international court. If he is extradited, Dela Rosa would be required to appear before the ICC to answer charges related to alleged war crimes committed during the drug war.
