Philippine Vice President Sara Duterte to Run for President in 2028

Philippine Vice President Sara Duterte Announces Presidential Bid

Vice President Sara Duterte has announced her intention to run for president in the 2028 election, following in the footsteps of her father, former President Rodrigo Duterte. In a livestreamed address on Wednesday, Duterte stated that she had taken 47 years to understand her life’s purpose and expressed her willingness to serve her country.

Duterte also acknowledged her past support for incumbent President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. during the last presidential election and asked for forgiveness from her followers. She cited the ongoing struggles in the Philippines, including corruption, poverty, and a cost-of-living crisis, as reasons for her candidacy.

The announcement comes amid controversy surrounding Duterte’s father, who is currently on trial at the International Criminal Court (ICC) for crimes against humanity. Duterte has been facing multiple impeachment complaints in the House of Representatives for alleged corruption and making a death threat against President Marcos.

Duterte’s decision to run for president has raised concerns among observers, including Cleve Arguelles, a political scientist and CEO of WR NUMERO Research. Arguelles noted that the announcement may be an attempt to “freeze panic” within Duterte’s faction before it becomes too late.

The Philippines is currently facing significant challenges, including corruption and economic issues. The 2028 presidential election will likely be closely watched by the international community.
