Players face disciplinary action for mouth-covering during World Cup matches

International Football Association Board Approves New Red Card Rule

The International Football Association Board (IFAB) has approved new amendments to its rules, aimed at addressing inappropriate behavior on the pitch ahead of the World Cup in North America. The changes include a provision that allows referees to issue red cards to players who cover their mouths during confrontations with opponents or other players.

According to IFAB, this change is intended to prevent players from hiding their abusive language while engaging in verbal altercations. The rule also applies to situations where players leave the field in protest of a referee’s decision, as well as team officials convincing their teammates to walk off in protest.

The new rules follow a recent incident at a UEFA Champions League match, where Benfica player Gianluca Prestianni made racially abusive comments towards Real Madrid’s Vinicius Junior while covering his mouth. FIFA President Gianni Infantino has pushed for these changes, citing the need for increased discipline and respect on the pitch.

The amendments will be communicated to all 48 teams competing in the World Cup in the coming weeks. While not mandatory, the new rules give competition organizers like FIFA the option to use them. UEFA has already taken disciplinary action against Prestianni, handing him a six-game ban for his verbal abuse.

The World Cup is set to begin on June 11 with Mexico facing South Africa in Mexico City. The changes are intended to enhance player conduct and promote a more respectful atmosphere during matches.
