Police in South Africa Arrest Son of Former Zimbabwe Leader Robert Mugabe

Two men, including Bellarmine Chatunga Mugabe, have been detained by South African authorities after a gardener was shot at his home in Johannesburg. According to police and family lawyer Ashley Mugiya, the incident occurred on Thursday and resulted in one employee sustaining a single gunshot wound. The victim is currently in critical condition.

Police confirmed that both men were later placed under arrest and will face charges of attempted murder. However, the motive behind the shooting remains unknown at this stage, and police investigations are ongoing.

The suspects, who have not been named by authorities, were reportedly uncooperative when first questioned by police. They allegedly refused to disclose the location of a gun involved in the incident.

Mugiya stated that lawyers from South Africa will represent Mugabe in the case. The younger Mugabe is the son of Zimbabwe’s former president Robert Mugabe, who passed away in Singapore in 2019. His older brother, Robert Jr, and Bellarmine Chatunga Mugabe sometimes reside in Johannesburg.

The Mugabe family has been involved in several criminal cases over the years. In a separate incident, Robert Mugabe Jr was fined $300 last year after admitting to possession of marijuana in Zimbabwe. Grace Mugabe, the former president’s second wife, was accused of assaulting a model with an electrical cord in 2017. She was initially ordered to appear in court but later granted diplomatic immunity.

The two men detained on Thursday will face charges related to the shooting incident.
