Vatican City - Pope Leo XIV presented his first encyclical, titled “Magnifica humanitas: On Safeguarding the Human Person in the Time of Artificial Intelligence,” at the Vatican on Monday. The document is addressed to Catholic bishops and outlines the pope’s concerns regarding the increasing use of artificial intelligence (AI) in various aspects of life.
The encyclical emphasizes the need for responsible AI development, highlighting the potential risks associated with its growing use in warfare, healthcare, and other areas. Pope Leo XIV called on policymakers to establish robust legal frameworks, independent oversight, and informed users to ensure that AI is developed and used in a way that prioritizes human dignity and well-being.
The pope also expressed concerns about the normalization of war through the use of AI-powered military tools. He stated that the development and deployment of such systems must be subject to rigorous ethical constraints to guarantee respect for human life and avoid the creation of lethal technologies.
AI experts, including Christopher Olah, the cofounder of Anthropic, were present at the presentation of the encyclical. Olah acknowledged that AI companies operate within a complex set of incentives and constraints that can sometimes conflict with doing what is right. He emphasized the need for developers to prioritize ensuring job security and addressing the challenges associated with interpreting complex system behavior.
The pope’s encyclical marks a significant shift in his papacy, as he has made artificial intelligence a central theme throughout his tenure. The document will be communicated to Catholic bishops and is expected to have far-reaching implications for the church’s 1.4 billion members worldwide.
